What Is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?

Intense Pulsed Light is a skincare technology that produces a high-powered flash of light containing a range of wavelengths. From 400nm to 1200nm, specific wavelength ranges or combinations of ranges are used to target pigmentation and vascularity. This enables the effective treatment of brown spots, broken blood vessels, and hair removal.

HOW Does IPL Photofacial work?

Broad-spectrum light is flashed through a handheld applicator which filters out the appropriate wavelengths, optimizing it to affect a specific target. Light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by melanin and vascular lesions causing damage. This forces brown spots to shed and blood vessels collapse, resulting in a clear skin tone.

The Protofacial process

The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed and then prepped with a thin layer of coupling gel. A cold handpiece tip the approximate size of your fingertip will touch the skin and flash IPL multiple times over the face, neck, hands, chest, etc., covering the entire area. Once the treatment is over, we will apply cold aloe gel to the skin.

PHOTOFACIAL RESULTS TAKE 2 WEEKS

Immediately after IPL Photofacial and for the following two weeks brown spots will darken and lift up and out of the skin. Blood vessels will initially turn purple and then gradually fade as they absorb in the body.

TIP: Schedule a Micropeel treatment two weeks after your Photofacial

These treatments complement each other as Photofacial brings damaged skin cells to the surface while a Micropeel polishes off the dead skin revealing a bright and clear skin tone!

Common Photofacial Questions

  • A photofacial is an intense pulsed light or IPL aesthetic skin treatment used for eliminating brown spots and broken blood vessels on the face and body. Photofacial is also used to treat rosacea.

  • The light beams flashing into the skin multiple times are forceful and produce an uncomfortable snapping sensation. We recommend taking 400 to 600 mg of ibuprofen 45 minutes before treatment to maximize comfort.

  • • 2-4 weeks of “social downtime.”

    • Your skin will feel tingly and warm following the treatment and for up to a few hours.

    • Brown spots will appear darker and will continue to darken for the next few days as damaged cells lift to the surface, forming superficial crusting that resembles coffee grounds or cracked pepper. These dead skin cells will shed over the next 2-4 weeks, lightening brown spots.

    • Blood vessels will purple immediately and gradually fade from view over the next few weeks as the body naturally absorbs the dried blood cells.

  • Social downtime refers to the time following an IPL photofacial where your skin does not look its best until it thoroughly exfoliates away brown spots and fully absorbs broken blood vessels. During this time, you are free to go out and do your daily activities; however, you should avoid planning social events where you want to look your best.

  • As soon as the “coffee grounds” thoroughly exfoliate off the skin and your body eliminates all of the dried blood vessels, this process takes approximately one month.

  • Skin cells hold memory; therefore, the same sunspot can return in the future. Prolonged and unprotected sun exposure will expedite this. Be sure to wear SPF daily and every two hours when outside to protect your investment.

  • Depending on the severity of your sun damage or rosacea, 1-3 treatments are needed consecutively, spaced apart every four weeks, to achieve the desired result. Repeat treatments are recommended annually.

  • Your treatment will finish with a cool gel and the application of sunscreen if there is daylight.

Additionally, cool packs may be applied for extra comfort

If desired, you may use makeup on the treated area following the treatment.

Wash your face at night and apply a calming moisturizer.

Make sure to wear SPF daily and reapply every 2 hours if outside.

Do not pick or scratch the treatment area, allow brow spots to flake off naturally.
