What Causes Acne?

One of the questions frequently asked by The WooSkin patients is ‘why am I getting acne’? Acne is an inflammation of the skin as a result of dead skin cells clogging the skin pores which causes bacteria to build up, creating blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, mila and cysts on their face and/or body.  Acne breakouts are more common on oily skin types as excess oil production causes dead skin cells to get sticky and unable to shed from the skin thus clogging the pore.

Acne is genetic and could run in the family, other causes may stem from your lifestyle, environment, or from  hormonal fluctuations.

Why Does Acne Cause Scarring?

When acne attacks the skin blood rushes to the area to heal and remedy the infection. Unfortunately, this rush of blood also causes collagen to break. Once the spot or spots are healed, the collagen around the area falls apart, creating a hole or divot in the skin. Blood can also stain the skin causing a brown or red mark that may take weeks or up to months to fade.

When the blood comes to the surface, it looks like a brown spot, but it is actually dried up blood under the skin which may or may not ultimately fade over time.

Types of Acne Scars:

As the body tries to heal the area where acne occurred by attempting to create new collagen to replace the broken collagen caused by the healing process, scarring can occur. The scarring is due to the difference in appearance between the new collagen and the original skin.

There are basically four types of scars: Boxcar Acne Scars, which appear as box-like depressions in the skin with distinctive edges; Rolling acne scars which appear wave-like over the surface of the skin, making the overall appearance of the skin appear uneven and bumpy; Ice Pick acne scars which appear as deep and narrow skin indentations; and Hypertrophic and Keloid Acne Scars which appear a raised bumps of scar tissue in the areas where the acne once occurred.
